What do I do if I don't have coordinates for the wells on my site?

August 8, 2009

EnviroInsite allows you to digitize the well locations using a basemap.  The well locations and well ids are loaded directly into your data file.  The basemap file you use for digitizing should be in UTM, state plane, or any other distance-based coordinate system.  That is, the coordinates should be in units of feet or meters.   The CAD file should not be in latitude – longitude coordinates.   Here’s what I recommend for entering the wells into a data file:

  1.  Find the empty input.xls file in My EnviroInsite Work and copy it to your project folder.

  2.  Start EnviroInsite

  3.  File -> Open Database

  4. Select input.xls from your project folder and hit OK button

  5. Insert -> CAD

  6. Select your CAD file and hit OK button

  7. View -> Zoom - > Extent

  8.  You should now see the CAD fileMove the cursor across the screen and check that the coordinates look correct.

  9.  Insert -> Well

  10. Use the mouse and click on the location of your well

  11. Fill in the well and screen id.  If it’s a boring log and there is not well screen then you can leave the default top and bottom of screen.  To head off potential problems down the road, it’s best if the value of the top and bottom of screen is between the ground surface and well bottom.  (You can always leave all of the default values in this dialog box and then edit the spreadsheet when you are finished digitizing the well locations.)

  12. Repeat steps 9 – 11 until you are done.

  13. File – Exit

Now open the spreadsheet and complete the database.  Now you are ready to go back into EnviroInsite and visualize your data.

  1. Start EnviroInsite

  2. File -> Open Database

  3. Select the attached spreadsheet file and hit OK button

  4. Insert -> CAD

  5. Select your CAD file and hit OK button

  6. Plot -> Wells

When I rotate an image this slows down the program redraws significantly.

March 16, 2009

This can be a problem.  It may be tolerable with small files, but will need to be addressed if the file is large and the program becomes difficult to use.  There are three possible work-arounds.

  • Turn off the image by removing the check box next to the image title in the plot control.  Then turn the image back on when you need it to understand where things lie or to create report graphics.

  • Reduce the file size.  Try switching to a jpeg format with a reduced image quality.  You might also try changing the image resolution.  Both of these entail editing the program in an image-editing program and saving out the image.

  • Rotate and save the image using image-editing software.  If you don’t have a program that can do this I can recommend a freeware program called Gimp for this purpose.  Once you have georeferenced the image in EnviroInsite you can bring up the property dialog box by double-clicking on the image.  Read from the dialog box the rotation that was applied in georeferencing the image.  Next open the image file in Gimp or another similar program and rotate the image.  Save this out to a new file and  insert and georeference it in EnviroInsite.

Can I use and present alternative date formats as are used in the United Kingdom and elsewhere?

July 31, 2008

Date formats vary across the world.  The US is pretty much alone in using a date format with the month first as in 12/31/2008, while most of the rest of the world presents the day preceding the month as in 31/12/2008.  EnviroInsite supports both of these date formats.  The default format is the US format (mm/dd/yyyy), however the alternative format (dd/mm/yyyy) may be used by selecting View - Options and then selecting the desired date format from that dialog box.  The date controls within the various dialog boxes automatically change depending on the default format set in the operating system.

When I select the "tabulate by depth" in plotting my data tables, the program responds that no data is selected or each depth ends up as a separate table.

June 20, 2008

The tabulate by depth option requires that all of the data was measured on the same date.  Make sure that you select that date in the data query portion of the dialog box.

Secondly, the measurements must appear as having occurred at multiple screens for a given well.  For example, if the measurement are at MW-1 then you need to have entries in the screens table that look like:

Well       Screen   Top Elevation     Bottom Elevation

MW-1        s1           100                      95

MW-1        s2             90                      85

MW-1        s3             70                      68

MW-1        s4             55                      53

Even if the measurements were in fact taken of intervals of soil and not at well screens, you need to enter a set of "screens" that describe the intervals over which the measurements had been taken. (Yes, it is a little strange to enter soil intervals as a screen, but that just has to do with the history of the program.  We could change it now, but this might create confusion for legacy users.)

If you have both real well screens at a well and other screen data entered to represent measurements at soil intervals you may want to give the soil interval "screens" an id that starts with "s" for example so that you can select for the real well screens or the soil "screens" in these and other plots.

I receive the message "vdconv.exe file not found" when loading either a dxf or dwg file.  What is that and how can it be resolved?

March 31, 2008

Vdconv.exe is the executable for the VectorDraw File Converter that is installed along with EnviroInsite.  This external program is used to convert dxf and dwg files to the format used in EnviroInsite.  If you are getting this message then the program was either not installed correctly or the program has been removed from the operating system registry.  To correct this problem browse to the EnviroInsite installation folder.  This is typically c:\Program Files\EnviroInsite.  Then run SetupConverter.exe to install the file converter.

Why does the screen go blank when I select an object in 3d mode or rotate the window?

March 29, 2008

Some graphics cards are not entirely compatible with the OpenGL library that EnviroInsite uses to generate 3d graphics.  This causes some eccentric behavior in EnviroInsite, particularly when using the program's 3d capabilities.  There is a utility in the Files section of the EnviroInsite Users Group contained in vdrawgl.zip that allows you to change how OpenGL routines are interpreted on your graphics card.  Download and unzip the file.  Then run vdrawgl.exe and hit the next button on the upper and lower frames until the static image on the upper half of the program window matches the changing image on the lower half.  Then press the Accept and Exit button.

Can I create contours of data generated in MODFLOW or MT3D?

December 1, 2007

The Point Data plot commands (3d Contour Point Data, 2d Contour Point Data and 3d Surface Point Data) are designed to load data from any ASCII file, where each record contains the location coordinates and some value.  These can be either comma or space delimited.  The 3d Contour Point Data command requires a full x,y,z description of the coordinates in addition to the value to be contoured.  The 2d Contour and 3d Surface commands require only the horizontal coordinates (x,y) in addition to the value to be plotted.  MODFLOW and MT3D themselves do not output to either of these formats, although commercial model interfaces may be able to generate the data in the proper format.  If you are using GW Vistas for instance, select the EVS Field export option and use the file with the dat extension for 3d contouring.

I entered the activation code and received the message, "Failed to write license file."

November 30, 2007

These type of errors occur when you do not have privileges to create and edit files in particular directories.  If you have an IT group, ask if they will change your privileges to write to the All Users application directory.  If that is not possible then email support@enviroinsite.com and we will create a custom fix to resolve this problem.

Occassionally, when I switch to another application and then return to EnviroInsite, some portion of the screen is not redrawn.

November 27, 2007

This is disconcerting, but nothing to worry about.  If it looks like the screen needs to be refreshed, you can force a redraw by selecting ctrl-R from the keyboard or by hitting the button with the pencil icon in the control bar.

I'm confused about the difference between the data stored in the Borings and Stratigraphy tables and the rules for entering stratigraphy data.

November 23, 2007

Data in the Borings table typically relate the field notes from the geologist that logged a hole.  They are frequently detailed and describe soil units that are at field scale considered to be portions of a single hydrogeologic unit.  EnviroInsite, at present, does not generate plots that correlate units between data compiled in the Borings table.  The Stratigraphy table contains an interpreted description of the hydrogeologic units.  3d geologic models, 3d fence diagrams and 2d geologic models on profiles are all generated using Stratigraphy data.  There are several simple rules you must be aware of in entering Stratigraphy data.

How do I enter and view measurements in soil, where there is no well or well screen.

November 18, 2007

Soil concentrations can be entered in the Observations table.  What is commonly misunderstood is that the horizontal location of the soil measurement should be entered in the Wells table and the vertical horizon of the measurement should be entered in the  Screens table.  This is the case even if there is no physical well or screen at this location.  You may elect to include "Soil" in the Media field of the Observations table record.  If you do so, make sure to also add a record in the Constituents table.  For example if you measure TCE in soil that is measured in units of mg/kg and TCE in water samples that is measured in mg/L then you need to have two records in the constituents table as follows:

Constituent    Units    Media

TCE              mg/L     water .....

TCE              mg/kg   soil  ....

You may also want to use the Class field of the Wells table to indicate those locations for which wells have not been constructed.  This will enable you to define your query to not plot these locations when you want to plot only real wells.

Received warning message "Sand not found in list" when trying to plot 3d boring logs or boring logs on profile.

November 15, 2007

This problem occurs because one of the soil types listed in the Borings table did not make it into the stored list of acceptable field values.  In this case this occurred because the user had entered "Sand " with an extra space at the end of the data field, whereas all other Sand values were entered without this extra space.  The key is to make sure that you are extremely careful in using consistent capitalization and not allowing extra spaces to creep into the data fields.  A software fix for this problem will be created for version 5.

The contents of the Formatted Value field are not being used when the Flag field contains ND or <.

November 14, 2007

The Formatted Value field in the Observations table provides a means of specifying how the data should be displayed in data tables and when posting measured values.  This allows you to control for instance the number of digits to be used in the displayed data and to provide multiple data qualifiers.   When the Flag value contains a non-detect, the program was incorrectly overriding the Formatted Value data field and displaying "ND".  This is a known bug common to versions 4.2.1 and prior.  The problem has been resolved as of version 4.2.2.

When I copy and paste from EnviroInsite into another application like MS Word, I find that there is a large white border around the pasted image.

November 11, 2007

Images copied by copy and paste into another application use the Windows Clipboard.  First of all, make sure that there is not extra white space on the EnviroInsite window that you are copying from.  This extra white space will end up in the pasted image.   Even if you eliminate all extra white space, the copied picture will have a white border.  You can usually eliminate the white space using the software that you have pasted your image into.  In Microsoft products (MS Word and MS Powerpoint):  (1) right-click on the pasted picture and select Format Picture, (2) select the Picture tab, and (3) enter "1" in each of the "Crop From" fields.  You can modify the crop distance afterwards by trial and error.

I have installed the upgrade, but the reported system id is blank.

November 5, 2007

The method for generating the system id changed as of EnviroInsite version 4.0.  If you try to upgrade from a prior version by simply overwriting the executable, the program will generate a blank system id.  If this happens then download and run a new setup file.  Execute EnviroInsite and the system id will appear in the start-up dialog box.

Dates in posted data and tabular data displayed as 12/30/1899.

October 31, 2007

This problem occurs when using MS Excel as the data file.  In this case the data has been dumped into the spreadsheet from a database where the dates had been stored in a text field.  There is a lot more going on behind the scenes in MS Excel than we'll ever understand.  It seems that although the date field cells appear to contain dates, if Excel thinks it is an arbitrary text string then EnviroInsite will not be able to handle the date field correctly.  The labor intensive approach is to highlight each date cell (one at a time), then hit F2 to edit and then hit the enter key to stop editing.  Repeat this for each row.  This is acceptable in a small data file, but the better approach is to set the field within the database to a date-type value before dumping it to the spreadsheet.

"Invalid Value field contents" error reported during data validation for row with no data or receiving warning during validation: "Warning: Wells table record not found corresponding to Screens table record: ..."

November 3, 2007

This problem occurs when using MS Excel as the data file.  It occurs because there is some residual formatting information in this row that has not been deleted.  The database driver continues to read beyond the end of data because of this formatting information, but then reports this error when it finds no data in the row.  The trick is to really delete the contents of this row (not just the visible contents) and just to be safe, every blank row to the end of the file.  To do so, click the mouse in the final row of your Excel data sheet.  Make sure to hit the row number to select the whole row.  Then press Shift - Ctrl and the down arrow to select all subsequent rows.  Finally, select Edit - Delete from the drop-down menus.   (Don't use the delete or backspace key.  These don't seem to be the same as Edit-Delete.)

Our plotted contours are inconsistent with some of the posted data.

November 2, 2007

Contours are created in EnviroInsite by the construction of a rectangular grid and the interpolation of the measured values onto the grid.  Increasing the resolution of the grid will increase the degree to which the contours will respect the data.  EnviroInsite has no limit on the grid resolution, however there are practical limits imposed by the time to generate the contours.  Increasing the resolution too much also may make the contours appear overly circuitous.  The ideal grid resolution may be found by trial and error.

Which interpolation method is best for 2d contouring of my data?

November 2, 2007

EnviroInsite's 2d contour methods support three interpolation methods:  linear interpolation, inverse distance, and kriging.  In the linear interpolation method, triangles are generated with the measurement points at the triangle corners and contours are generated within each triangle.  The other methods interpolate the measured values onto points on a rectangular grid and the contours generate using a routine adapted from the FARBE-2d routine of Pruesser (http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=62038.69651).  Linear interpolation is frequently very fast and creates attractive contours with the linear interpolation method.  For non-gridded data, the linear interpolation method is not generally useful.  The inverse distance method requires fewer parameter choices than kriging, but sometimes results in a "dimpled" pattern, where high or low values at measurement points end up circled by isocontours.  Frequently, the default kriging parameters may need to be adjusted, although you may sometimes get lucky and find that the default parameters work just fine.

I've created a surface map with a draped image.  The image was there before but now I don't see it.  What happened to the image?

November 2, 2007

Presuming that the image world file was in a coordinate system that is consistent with your data file, the reason that the image doesn't show up is most likely because you have gone out render mode.  You must be in render mode to view 3d contours as translucent images, to see stratigraphy images, or to see draped images.  Unfortunately, when you go to render mode any line objects are no longer visible, so this is kind of a regrettable tradeoff that is just a limitation of the OpenGL graphics library.  To switch to render mode, select View - Mode - Render from the drop-down menu.

How do I use EnviroInsite to visualize my data that is stored in an EQuIS3 data file?

November 3, 2007

There are several approaches you can take.

Use EnviroInsite to read native EQuIS 3 files.  EnviroInsite is set up to read native EQuIS 3 files.  This is all done automatically, however your database must have a similar use of fields as the Springfield EQuIS tutorial database for which this feature was programmed.  If you want to try this call me tomorrow and I’ll explain.  I just now brought it up-to-date with the current version of the EnviroInsite data files.  The version you are working with will not work correctly.  I have attached the updated version in Copy (2) of insite.zip.  Simply unzip this into your installation folder and you are good to go.

You can add and then run queries in equis_ei_sqls.zip to your EQuIS 3 data file.  These will create EnviroInsite tables in the database file that you can open.  This uses the same queries as used in EnviroInsite for option (1), but with this option you can modify the queries as necessary.  The instructions for this option are as follows:

To generate wells table run insite_wells_table_qry

To generate screens table:

(1)     run insite_screens_table_qry

(2)     run insite_screens_table_qry2

(3)     run Delete_dup_screens

To generate constituents table run insite_constituents_table_qry.  Add “water level” to constituents by hand.

To generate observations table

(1)     run insite_observations_table_qry

(2)     run insite_obs_water_level_table_qry

 To generate borings table run insite_borings2

 To generate stratigraphy table

(1)     run insite_strat1

(2)     run insite_strat2

You can write your own set of custom queries that will pull out the data from the EQuIS database and generate a EI data file.  Starting from the queries in equis_ei_sqls.zip are a big head start. HydroAnalysis can help you, but will need to charge you our time.
